FakeCatch

FakeCatch: Fake Review Detector

Looking for a Fakespot alternative?

Mozilla closed Fakespot in July 2025, and the browser extension stopped working with it. FakeCatch is a free Chrome extension that does the same job in a different way: it scores every review on the page, and it is not limited to Amazon.

Free for 50 reviews scored a day. No account, no card.

or try

Runs the same check as the extension. Your text is scored and the score is shown to you; see what happens to it. 10 tries a day.

What happened to Fakespot

Fakespot analysed product reviews and gave each product a letter grade for how trustworthy its reviews looked. Mozilla bought it in 2023 and shut it down on 1 July 2025, along with its browser extensions and its website. If you still have the extension installed, it no longer shows anything.

That left a gap for anyone who used it as a quick sanity check before buying. FakeCatch fills the same gap with a different method: instead of one grade for the whole product, it gives every review its own trust score, right where the review sits on the page.

How to switch in two minutes

  1. Remove the old Fakespot extension from Chrome: it no longer does anything.
  2. Add FakeCatch from the Chrome Web Store. There is no account to create.
  3. Open any Amazon product page and scroll to the reviews. Each one gets a coloured badge within about a second.
  4. Click the FakeCatch icon in the toolbar to see how many reviews look suspicious, and the star average from the believable ones next to the overall one.
  5. On a store it does not know, click the icon and press Scan this page.

What a score looks like

Three reviews of the same water bottle, run through the same check as the extension (you can try your own above):

  • “This premium water bottle is the best water bottle for gym, office and travel. Leak-proof, BPA-free…” scored Trust 0%, red, for ad-like wording. It reads like the product listing, with no sign anyone used it.
  • “Very good product, nice quality, value for money. Thank you seller, delivered on time.” scored Trust 25%, amber, for generic praise. Honest buyers write like this too, so amber means “read the others”, not “fake”.
  • “Filled it with ice at 9pm and there was still ice at 7am… I cross-thread it about one time in five, which leaks in my bag.” scored Trust 100%, green: specific, checkable detail, including a complaint.

What it does not do

It judges how each review reads. It does not track reviewer histories, seller records or price changes over time, which Fakespot used for its seller grades. A score is an automated opinion and can be wrong; treat a low one as a reason to look closer.

FakeCatch is an independent product. It is not affiliated with Mozilla or Fakespot.

Questions

Is it free like Fakespot was?

Yes for normal use: 50 reviews scored a day, on every site, with no account. Pro at $10 a year removes the daily limit.

Does it work on Firefox?

Not yet. It is a Chrome extension, and works in Chrome-based browsers such as Edge and Brave.

Does it give a grade for the whole product?

Not a letter grade. The popup shows how many reviews on the page look suspicious and the average star rating from only the believable ones, which tells you the same thing with the working shown.

Does it collect my shopping history?

No. It reads the reviews on the page and nothing else: not your account, orders, basket or browsing history.
